(Spars, Skeleton & Skin, drilling & fitting)

Construction of the vertical stabilizer is very similar to the horizontal stabilizer. Begin by cleocoing the VS-803PP spar reinforcement plate to the VS-803 rear spar channel.

Cleco the hinge brackets VS-410PP, VS-411PP, and VS-412PP in position. The VS-410 hinge brackets have two holes missing from the pattern. Use the holes in the spar channel as guides and back drill the entire six hole pattern through the upper VS-410PP Only. The lower holes of the VS-410PP will be drilled for bolts later, in assembly with the fuselage. Drill all the pilot holes full size, shifting the clecos as necessary, then mark the parts so they can be reassembled the same way later and take them apart.

I used a piece of test strip to adjust the countersink and dropped a rivet in to check the fit

Cleco the VS--801PP skin to the VS-803PP spar and drill all the pilot holes to full size.

Cleco skin to spar, I cut the blue protective coat off to expose the holes. Click here for a neat trick someone had on their site of how to do it.

Remove the skins and disassemble the spar. Deburr all holes and edges, the dimple the holes in the flanges of VS-803PP where the skins will attach.

Relocated hinge brackets to fit and mount VS Spar in jig. I am following the Orndorff video as it seems the sequence of the steps they used worked well on the HS

Position the VS-407 Rib on the  VS rear spar using skin scraps and look through holes to see center line you have drawn on the rib and get it aligned. Drill and cleco.

I thought that I might as well use the pictures I have taken and also make a PowerPoint presentation of all of the steps. Then I will burn it to a CD. It could be used on a projector to enlarge it

Use side grip clecos to position VS-405 rib in place then drill up through holes in the VS-404 Rib and front spar and though the VS-405 rib, then drill remaining holes in skin to the rib, disassemble and move to deburring and priming

Drill skin to the ribs and spar on both sides, use side clecos and put in and drill VS-405 last
