December 26, 2001 Mistake #2 Beware bending over this tab got me in trouble, I have been following Dan Checkoway's site closely and his comment is not as easy as it sounds and I will say amen to that. I fought with it and finally got it more or less bent but am not happy with it and managed to start a crack in the corner which I stopped drilled. Dan Orndorff's video suggests if you get in trouble here and screw up or break tab off to cut it off and fashion a small rib. This would have been the best solution here after the bending went badly. I have a very good picture of a small rib that works well here from another builder and will link it as soon as I can find it again. I don't think mine is quite bad enough to cut off, but I think I am going to fashion some sort of rib and put in to reinforce the crack in the corner.

December 26, 2001 Tab bent over, see the crack at the corner, I am going to put some kind of reinforcement rib in that area to strengthen it. Fashioning a small rib and cutting off the tabs would have worked better than trying to fix it.

December 26, 2001 Today has not been one of my better days. I have fooled around several hours on something that should have take a couple of minutes if I had done it right. You always pay a big price when you try to fix mistakes that should have been done correctly the first time. Fashioned a couple of short stiffeners to reinforce the area where I bent the tab. Update----I got a new tool that will bend aluminum click here to see it

December 26, 2001 It looks kind of cheesy, but I think it will be strong enough.

December 29, 2001 After the first debacle of trying to bend the tab on the elevator skin which I made a mess , I found a way that worked better for me for bending the trim tab tabs. I laid the v-jig flat on the table and clamped it and then was able to get the little v insert in a little tighter and aligned with the tab better on the bend line. I will put a little better explanation for you click here for a PDF enlargement.

December 26, 2001 With the V-jig flat on the table and the V insert pushed tight inside along the place you want the bend it bends fairly easily ( I just used a combination of the plastic dead weight hammer and a wood block.

December 26, 2001 The tabs folded over quite nicely and now from reading from those who have gone before me that (Thanks to Dan Checkoway's website warning that now is the time to back rivet the spar to the bottom skin because after the trailing edge is bent it would be hard to do because you would have to pry it open again possibly overstressing the bend. The other choice is to pop rivet it, but everyone seems to agree that back riveting is the better way to go. Reading ahead on other peoples websites is a tremendous help in problem solving, many thanks for these great websites of folks who have gone before me, I am already reading up on a couple who are doing the wings and it helps a lot when the time comes as you remember little things you have read in the past.
