The first step
listed in the preparation of the main spar is
to drill and countersink the nut plate rivet holes so a AN426
flush rivet will fit.

Countersink
the plate nut rivet holes |

Notice
after I got the the new counter sink I tried countersinking the
screw holes and with the new counter sink riveting the plate on
and using the screw hole as the pilot the wider countersink worked
without chattering.. I don't think the template is necessary, but
I left the pictures on the page if you are not going to get
the new countersink you may want to try it.
I am using a method
suggested by several builders by making a template to countersink
the larger center holes for the screws, by making a plate nut template to go behind to keep the
countersink pilot straight and from chattering. Drill the holes
through the template using the holes in the spar as a guide. Use a
#40 drill for the rivet holes and #30 drill for the center hole,
which is going to serve as a guide for the #30 special countersink
mentioned in the next picture.

After reading several posting
from the discussion group some builders like an alternate way of
doing this operation than spelled out on the plans from the
factory, as they feel
they get better results.. Avery has a special 1/2"
countersink just for this job and I have ordered it to countersink
the holes. You can see the description of the countersink in the
larger picture.

Put a couple of rivets through
the spar holes and template to align the countersink pilot.
Don't squeeze them, just use them for alignment and hold the
template in place. The one shown is not the one I am going to use,
I am waiting to get the counter sink mentioned above the number 30 hole
in the center template hole will align the
countersink.

Tried out the new 1/2"
countersink using the template under the spar to center the pilot,
seems to work quite well. I am going to work on the rear spar so I
can get it primed while the weather is good, and then go back and
finish drilling the nut plates.

Alodined right rear spar, ready
to prime, alodining is definitely more work, I hope it is worth
it, but the rain gutter bath and air siphon make the clean-up real
easy.

Installed a few of
the plate nuts and riveted then on. Tried using the new
countersink using the center hole of the installed plate nut as
guide for special 1/2" countersink and it worked well. I
don't think I will need to use the nut plate guide as the wider
countersink seems to center ok without it and does not chatter
very much. Screw in a few screws they how they fit.

I have the no
holes yoke dialed in and it is doing a good job of squeezing the plate nut
rivets. Get the adjustable set holder it really makes getting a
very fine adjustment easy.

When you flip the
spar over to do the bottom plate nuts, there are some additional
ones you need to do for the tank access plates as well as all the
same ones you did on the top for the skins. Some Plate nut PN's
change along the spar.
